Health Care in Oregon - FAST FACTS

  • 53% of Oregonians are covered by health insurance obtained through their employers. 6% have an individual health insurance plan. 25% have a public health plan, such as the Oregon Health Plan or Medicare.


  • In February 2008, there were 407,478 Oregonians enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan. Most of these people were enrolled in OHP Plus, which requires that the member be low income and meet other eligibility criteria (such as being a child, being pregnant, or being disabled).


  • When the Oregon Department of Human Services opened a “reservation list” to add a few thousand more people to OHP Standard, over 91,000 people signed up in just one month.


  • 12% of Oregonians live with incomes less the Federal Poverty Level. 30% have incomes under 200% of the poverty level. Over 17% of the children in Oregon live in poverty


  • Nearly one out of every five Oregon residents lives without prescription drug coverage.


  • Between one quarter and one third of all Oregonians do not visit the dentist at least annually. Only 13% of low-income children in Oregon receive preventive dental care. (The U.S. average is 31%.)


  • About 17% of adult Oregonians have severe mental illnesses.


  • There are substantial disparities in health care access between racial and ethnic groups. For example, 84% of white pregnant women in Oregon received first trimester prenatal care. This compares to only 74% for African-Americans and 69% for Hispanics.
